A mermaid gown is decided by three measurements a size chart never takes: where your waist actually sits, where your hip is widest, and the exact point below the knee where the skirt should break. Get those right and the dress does everything. Get them wrong and it pulls across the thigh all night.

The bodice is boned and the hip panel cut on the cross so it moulds instead of gripping. We set the flare point at your knee, not a standard measurement, and build a walking allowance into the back seam so you can climb a step without hitching the skirt.

Most of our Port Elizabeth commissions fall into three shapes: a fitted lace mermaid for the Baakens Valley and city venues, a structured mikado A-line that holds its line on an exposed lawn, and a lighter second look for the reception. Beadwork is weighted with the wind in mind, veils are cut shorter or fully anchored, and every hem is finished so sand and lawn don't mark it. Commissions begin from N$ 4,000, with the 50/20/30 payment schedule spread across the making.

Mermaid gowns bought ready-made are almost always altered in the wrong place — taking the hem up shortens the flare and ruins the proportion.
